The depiction of Ganesha is inspired by the majesty and immense power of an elephant. Everything automatically moves out of his way. Ganesha is the archetype of the amiable and humorous power that removes obstacles with ease.

His sound symbol is "gam", and in his basic mantra the alternative name Gaṇapati is used.
Oṃ gaṃ Gaṇapataye namaḥ |

Verse dedicated to him:

वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभ ।
निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥

vakra-tuṇḍa mahā-kāya
sūrya-koṭi-sama-prabha |
nir-vighnaṃ kuru me deva
sarva-kāryeṣu sarvadā ||

O you with the curved trunk and mighty body, shining like ten million suns, you heavenly one, always bring it about that obstacles vanish in all my tasks.
